Cockerel Plate
Theme : Industry
The South Wales Pottery at Llanelli ran from 1839 until 1921. The wares produced by the pottery were for everyday use, and their patterns were highly coloured and far from pretentious. The cockerel plate is a good example of Llanelly pottery; the design has a sponge decorated border and in its centre is a brightly coloured and loosely painted cockerel. The brush strokes are simple and bold. This plate, as with all the cockerel patterned plates was hand-painted (underglaze) by Sarah Jane Roberts, who was more commonly known as 'Aunty Sal'. This design can be found on a variety of wares manufactured at the works including bowls and cups. The design is exclusive to the South Wales Pottery.
