John Dillwyn Llewelyn (Swansea: 1810 - 1882)
Welsh Costume / in the Welsh Arts Council Touring Exhibition catalogue of 1980 (John Dillwyn Llewelyn 1810-1882 : The first photographer in Wales) this image is entitled 'Garden girls in the costume of Glamorgan'. JDL's daughters, Thereza and Emma, are posed in a doorway (possibly to the kitchen), between them a basket of produce, most likely from the kitchen garden. The girls have been positioned so that the component parts of their costume may be identified. Wales' national costume is based on the hardwearing clothes of the peasants and farm workers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
