Roman Milestone
Theme : Archaeology
Between 268 and 270 A.D., the Roman legion, which was stationed at Bovium, placed this milestone to mark their marching route (Bovium was the Latin name for Boverton in the Vale of Glamorgan). It is inscribed IMP MC PIAVONIO VICTORINA AUG for the Emperor Caesar Marcus Piavonius Victorinus Augustus. It was discovered in 1835, built into a wall in Pyle. However we are not certain where it was originally placed because it may have been moved from its original site to be used in the wall. There is another Roman milestone at Melincryddan in Neath but we know that the Bovium stone is at least fifteen years older than the Neath (Nidum) stone. The Bovium milestone was acquired for Swansea Museum shortly after its discovery so it may well have been one of the first objects in the Museum's collection.
