Stone Head of a Lady from Oxwich Castle
Theme : Archaeology

Dating from the fourteenth century, this carved stone head of a lady was excavated at Oxwich Castle on the Gower Peninsula. It is possibly a corbel, a block built into a wall to support the weight of roofing beams, vaulting or arches. Carved corbels like this were widely used in church architecture so this may have come from the chapel at Oxwich Castle.

This Item is located at Swansea Museum in the Stone Gallery
