Pascoe Grenfell - Sir Martin Archer Shee
Theme : People
Born in 1761 at Marazion in Cornwall, Pascoe Grenfell made his fortune in the copper industry. He was elected M.P. for Marlow (1802) and for Penryn (1820). In 1829 he became Governor of the Royal Exchange Assurance, from whom Swansea Museum Service purchased this oil on canvas by Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850) in June 2001. Pascoe Grenfell was also a partner in the firm of Williams & Grenfell. He died in 1838. His son, Pascoe St. Leger Grenfell (1798-1879) ran the family-owned Middle and Upper Bank copper works, he and his family lived at Maesteg House in St. Thomas. This area still echoes the name in Grenfell Park Road and Grenfell Town, the family are remembered for their generosity in giving land and money towards the building of schools and churches. While his grandson, Field-Marshal Lord Francis Grenfell gave the Egyptian mummy, Hor to Swansea Museum after pursuing a career in the army rather than in the family copper business.
