Swansea Harbour Trust Policeman's Truncheon
Theme : The Sea

This wooden truncheon, with a turned grip, would have been part of the equipment issued to a policeman employed by the Swansea Harbour Trust to maintain the security of the docks area of the town. The Swansea Harbour Trust was established in 1791, with the task of the Trust being ' to enlarge and preserve the harbour of the town of Swansea in the County of Glamorganshire.' The Harbour Act of 1791 also gave the Trust the power to provide a lighthouse on the outer Mumbles islet. The Trust's success was made manifest in 1902 / 03 when they built the red brick and Portland stone-fronted offices on Adelaide Street in Swansea - the building now houses Morgan's Hotel, which in its refurbishment has retained many of the original features of the building.
