John Dillwyn Llewelyn (Swansea: 1810 - 1882)

In a Quarry near Fynone, Swansea / as well as having a passion for photography, John Dillwyn Llewelyn was also a keen scientist, this photograph reflects those dual interests. A smartly dressed gentleman sits on a rocky ledge, with a stick in his left hand he draws our attention to an area of interest within the rock formation. This photograph would also have been of interest to John Dillwyn Llewelyn's friend, Hugh Falconer - a leading palaeontologist. In John Dillwyn Llewelyn: pioneer photographer, author Gerald Gabb explains, "The sides of Townhill in Swansea were quarried for housebuilding stone, as the town grew, especially from 1840 onwards. This is one of the sandstone quarries along its southern slopes."

c.1850
