Louis Philippe as Fagin in the Condemned Cell - John Leech
Theme : Art and Culture
A drawing of the French king, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) as Fagin in the condemned cell by John Leech. Leech (1817-1864) was chief caricaturist on Punch from the magazine's inception, producing some 3,000 drawings in the twenty years between 1841 and 1861. He was also a friend of Charles Dickens, illustrating the Christmas books, including A Christmas Carol. In art historical terms, Leech is placed between George Cruickshank and George Du Maurier, while his work has been praised for taking humorous art 'up-market'. This drawing is part of the Deffett Francis Collection. John Deffett Francis (1815-1901), the artist and collector gave some 2500 prints and drawings to Swansea, over a twenty-five year period from 1876 to 1901, these are now housed at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.
