The Monnow Bridge - Thomas Hearne
Theme : Art and Culture
Hearne's particular stays in the Wye valley and Monmouth - the site of the 13th century Monnow Bridge - are dated to the late 1780s and again in 1794 in the company of George Beaumont. The major project of Hearne's career and one that occupied much of his time, was the illustration of the publication The Antiquities of Great Britain, a collaboration with the publisher William Byrne. Issued in fascicules, 52 prints appeared between 1778 and 1786 before a ten-year hiatus and the publication of a further 32 plates. The landscape of the Wye valley was associated with the development of ideas of the picturesque. In 1794 Hearne provided the illustrations to Payne Knight's philosophical poem The Landscape. This wash drawing is part of the Deffett Francis Collection.
