William Hogarth 1764
Theme : Art and Culture

Having been appointed Serjeant-Painter to King George II in 1758, artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) celebrated his elevation by painting a self-portrait, entitled The Artist Painting the Comic Muse. This oil on canvas (now at the National Portrait Gallery) provided the engraved frontispiece to portfolios of his prints. Towards the end of his life he reworked the plate, removing his smile and darkening the lines of the Comic Muse Thalia. The caption was changed simply to be his name and the date 1764.

This Item is located at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in the Permanent Collection
