The Museums Service Reserve Collection is housed in an historically important
building on the former Hafod/Morfa Copper Works site. In the mid-nineteenth
century the Hafod/Morfa copper-smelting complex was the centre of world
copper smelting activity. Little evidence remains of this industrial past
however, save for the buildings on this site.
The
Museums Store occupies a building, parts of which date back to c.1830.
For most of its industrial life it was used as a Rolling Shed but was
in use as a warehouse before the Local Authority acquired the site in
1980. The building provides nearly 2000 sq.m of storage space, open-plan
in design. Smaller side rooms and annexes, provide office and additional
storage space.
The intention is to develop this building into a public-access store
and collections centre. Some of the side rooms now have environmentally
controlled storage for sensitive collections. The building houses the
Reserve Collections of both Swansea Museum and the recently closed Maritime
and Industrial Museum. While further building work is currently being
undertaken to house the collections from the Maritime and Industrial Museum
until such time as they are required for the new Waterfront Museum, which
is due to open in 2005. Of course, not all the material that was on display
will be going to the new museum; therefore it is essential that access
to the residual items is available to the public, as in many cases they
are only in the museum’s possession thanks to public donation.
The
Museum Stores at Landore are very accessible, for example, recent improvements
in the area mean that there is a large car park alongside the stores building.
The building’s position at the centre of a site that has world importance
in terms of its industrial heritage means it is well placed to operate
as an interpretation centre for the site. The building will become a Collections
Information Centre, given that it will house the diverse reserve collections
of the Museums Service.
